Description

It is 16th century Japan and you are one of two ninja employed by Lord Gohda, an uniquely compassionate samurai lord. As either Rikimaru or Ayame, you must proceed through your assigned quests, at first dispatching the amoral and unsavory folk in your lord’s domain. As the game progresses, you will come face to face with greater threats from tengu goblins and oni demons.

A full 3D game in the Tomb Raider spirit, Tenchu focuses on stealth and attacking unseen over straight action. Not being spotted leads to higher scores and better equipment. To aid in this, you can not only creep about and hug walls, but also use your grappling hook.

Scenery is diverse, from Japanese castles to mountain retreats, each with their own types of opponents and soundtrack. Game engine cutscenes push the story forward, which various slightly for each of the two ninja.

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

Overview & History

Released initially for the PlayStation in 1998 by Acquire, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins redefined the ninja genre by pivoting away from hack-and-slash tropes into deliberate, tactical espionage. While never officially released as a dedicated coin-op arcade cabinet in the traditional sense, the game's high-stakes, instant-death mechanics and level-based mission structure have made it a legendary staple of retro arcade emulation platforms. Set in feudal Japan, the dark, supernatural storyline follows two elite assassins of the Azuma Ninja Clan—Rikimaru, a fierce warrior wielding a legendary ninja-to, and Ayame, a swift, dual-wielding kunoichi. Serving their benevolent lord, Gohda Matsunojo, the duo must uncover a demonic conspiracy orchestrated by the wicked Lord Mei-Oh and the traitorous ninja Tesshu, battling corrupt samurai, sorcerers, and monstrous beasts across mist-shrouded villages and burning castles.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike contemporary action titles, Tenchu demands patience and spatial awareness. Players utilize a stealth meter that measures enemy awareness based on sound and sight, rewarding covert approaches with cinematic, one-hit stealth kill animations known as "Stealth Kills." The game's defining mechanical innovation is the Grappling Hook, allowing ninja to scale roofs, perch on rafters, and strike from the shadows. Rikimaru brings heavy, calculated strikes and exceptional reach, whereas Ayame relies on incredible agility and rapid, spinning combos. Arsenal variety includes shuriken, poison rice, smoke bombs, and caltrops, forcing players to master resource management as much as blade-work. Failure often results from being spotted, turning a quiet infiltration into a frantic, defensively demanding sword fight against multiple aggressive opponents.
