Description

There are four different kinds of racing: snowboard, bike, inline skates and skateboards and four different locations to choose from: Japan, Africa, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, each with three different tracks to master.

The main goal of the game is to advance through the level, punching and kicking opponents and avoiding obstacles scattered throughout the stage. The player can also perform mid-air tricks to earn extra money to add to their race winnings to buy better parts for their various means of transportation. Players can also play in a season mode, single race against computer opponents, or go head to head with a friend.

2Xtreme

Overview & History

Released by 989 Sports and developed by Zucker Board Productions in 1996, 2Xtreme stormed onto arcade and home consoles as the frantic, asphalt-grinding sequel to 1Xtreme. Diverting from traditional, sterile racing simulations, this aggressive extreme sports title embraced the mid-90s counter-culture obsession with extreme sports, punk-infused soundtracks, and bone-crunching collisions. Players were invited to ditch the rules and race across global metropolitan tracks on skateboards, inline skates, mountain bikes, and snowboards. While its predecessor laid the foundation, the arcade iteration refined the visual fidelity and tightened the physics, cementing its legacy as a chaotic, arcade-style adrenaline rush where survival was just as important as crossing the finish line first.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

2Xtreme differentiates itself through its chaotic combat-racing hybrid mechanics. Players select from a diverse roster of quirky, gear-specific athletes, each boasting distinct ratings for speed, acceleration, and combat toughness. Unlike standard racers, the objective isn't merely steering through checkpoints; it involves actively knocking down opponents, dodging unpredictable traffic, and executing high-flying tricks off urban ramps to fill the boost meter. The tracks span major international cities like Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Paris, filled with verticality, hidden shortcuts, and hazardous moving obstacles. Collecting items, unleashing devastating melee attacks with fists or weapons picked up on the track, and chaining mid-air acrobatics dictate who claims the podium. It is a relentless test of reflexes where wiping out means watching opponents aggressively speed past you while your character dusts themselves off.
