Description

Destruction Derby 2 is the sequel to the Sega Saturn, PlayStation and PC title, Destruction Derby. Here the player must race on up to seven different circuits, in a range of modes, similar to its predecessor. The modes are Wrecking Racing (where the player must destroy or spin the other competitors), Stock Car (a typical race where it’s 1st to the flag) and Destruction Derby, which is based around the crash arenas.

Destruction Derby 2

Overview & History

Released by Reflections Interactive and Psygnosis in 1996 for the PlayStation and PC, Destruction Derby 2 refined the vehicular combat genre by introducing high-speed oval tracks, treacherous figure-8 courses, and wide-open demolition arenas. Abandoning the confined bowl-like arenas of its predecessor, this sequel elevated the stakes with verticality, featuring massive jumps, steep drop-offs, and treacherous cliff-sides that drastically increased the severity of every collision. While there is no narrative storyline, the game captures the gritty, televised spectacle of a gladiatorial demolition sport, complete with roaring crowds, aggressive rival AI drivers, and bone-crunching metal deformation physics that set a new benchmark for arcade racing in the mid-90s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional racing titles where avoiding contact is the key to winning, Destruction Derby 2 rewards aggressive driving. Players compete across four distinct modes: Wrecking Racing, Stock Car Racing, the classic Destruction Derby, and the fan-favorite Bowl. The core mechanic revolves around real-time damage modeling—every T-bone, head-on crash, and rear-ending realistically cripples your vehicle's handling, steering response, and engine performance. Drivers must balance raw speed with tactical positioning, executing legendary 360-degree 'spin' maneuvers to wreck opponents while protecting their own radiator and engine block. The soundtrack, famously featuring heavy metal tracks by Skinny Puppy and Judgement Day, perfectly complements the vehicular carnage as bumpers fly, tires blow, and smoke billows from crippled frames.
