Description

Rollcage is a fast, furious 3D racing game from Psygnosis, combining elements from Death Rally with elements from Bullfrog’s classic Hi Octane: Race five other drivers in an immersive 3D environment while shooting at your peers and avoiding their retaliation.

You have a wide selection of tracks and cars, along with options for multiplayer gaming and a vast array of configuration options. Cars can drive up walls, flip over, and continue driving. This makes for a very quick and fluid gameplay unlike any other at the time of this game’s release.

Rollcage

Overview & History

Released in 1999 by Psygnosis, Rollcage is a high-octane, gravity-defying futuristic racing game developed by Attention to Detail (AtD). Set on distant alien worlds, the game drops players into ultra-fast combat racing where the vehicles feature gargantuan wheels that dwarf the actual chassis. This brilliant design choice means there is no wrong way up; if you crash hard enough to flip your car, it simply keeps driving seamlessly on the ceiling or walls. Powered by a blistering drum and bass soundtrack, Rollcage delivered a genuinely unique adrenaline rush that separated it from standard sci-fi racers of its era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Rollcage is defined by its absolute disregard for the laws of physics. Players speed through destructible environments populated by civilian traffic, collapsing tunnels, and skyscrapers, turning the terrain itself into a weapon. The core mechanic relies on asymmetrical power-ups scattered across the tracks. Grab a red icon and you unleash homing missiles, shields, or seismic blasts at opponents; pick up a blue icon and you utilize speed boosts, wall-climbing traction, or gravity-inverting attacks. The tracks are winding 360-degree tubes, allowing you to drive vertically along tunnel walls and drop onto rivals from above. Survival requires quick reflexes, route memorization, and mastering the split-second art of airborne recovery.
