Description

Twisted Metal III is the third installment in the Twisted Metal series and the first installment to be fully developed by 989 Studios. The game’s plot is centered on the titular competition in which various drivers in modified vehicles must destroy the other vehicles in an attempt to be the last one alive. The winner meets the organizer of the competition, a mysterious man named Calypso, who will grant the winner a single wish, regardless of price, size or even reality.
Twisted Metal III received generally negative reviews from critics, who criticized the game’s level design and physics engine but commented positively on the multiplayer gameplay and soundtrack by Rob Zombie and Pitchshifter. However, the game was commercially successful, selling 1.14 million copies in the United States alone.

Twisted Metal III

Overview & History

Released in 1998 by 989 Studios, *Twisted Metal III* marked a dramatic shift for the iconic vehicular combat franchise as Sony brought development in-house following the departure of creator SingleTrac. Set immediately after the events of the second tournament, the enigmatic Calypso returns from the dead to host yet another lethal demolition derby where the ultimate prize is the realization of the victor's darkest desires. Eschewing the gritty, comic-book-inspired aesthetic of its predecessors, this arcade installment embraced a brighter, more rigid physics engine powered by a completely new, proprietary graphics framework. Players navigated iconic, destructible arenas ranging from the sun-baked streets of Hollywood to the snowy ruins of Antarctica, accompanied by an unforgettable, pulse-pounding industrial-metal soundtrack provided exclusively by Rob Zombie.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike previous entries, *Twisted Metal III* introduced heavily reworked gameplay mechanics centered on a refined combo system and tighter arena navigation. Players select from a diverse roster of 12 distinct vehicular gladiators—ranging from the iconic ice cream truck Sweet Tooth to the brooding motorcycle rider Thumper—each armed with unique special attacks and varying attributes in armor, speed, and handling. Combat revolves around acquiring a lethal assortment of offensive and defensive armaments scattered across the maps, including napalm cones, homing missiles, ricochet bombs, and remote-detonated mines. Mastering the game requires executing complex button combinations for defensive maneuvers like rear-attacks, shields, and quick 180-degree turns to evade relentless pursuers. Furthermore, interactive environmental hazards, hidden passageways, and sprawling rooftops add verticality and strategic depth to every chaotic deathmatch, challenging players to master both combat timing and map layout awareness to survive Calypso's brutal gauntlet.
