Description

In concept, Twisted Metal 4 is a demolition derby which permits the usage of ballistic projectiles. Players choose a vehicle and an arena—or a series of arenas in the story mode—to engage in battle with opposing drivers. A variety of weapons are obtainable by pick-ups scattered throughout the stage. The objective of the game is to be the last one standing.
The game’s plot takes a different turn of events compared to its predecessors. Its intro video details the tournament’s story, starting around the 1900s as a circus-type caravan that traveled across the country spreading destruction everywhere. A young Sweet Tooth finds himself amazed by the contest and runs off in its pursuit, entering and eventually winning. As his wish, he desires to become the star of Twisted Metal, which Calypso gladly grants. At first revered by the chaos he created, as time went on Sweet Tooth became jealous of Calypso, until he decides to initiate a coup d’état helped by a group of midget clowns, and takes control of Twisted Metal.
It is also discovered that Calypso’s source of powers comes from a mysterious ring that consumes the souls of those who die, increasing his strength and youth, and Sweet Tooth having taken it, finds that he possess the same abilities as Calypso to grant wishes. He tends to cheat people with their wishes like Calypso does as well.

Twisted Metal 4

Overview & History

Released in 1999 by 989 Studios, Twisted Metal 4 marks a pivotal shift in the franchise's history as the final title developed by SingleTrac's creative splinter group before the license shifted entirely to Contraband Entertainment. Set in a dystopian universe where the deranged Calypso hosts a vehicular combat tournament granting the ultimate wish to the lone survivor, this installment injects a heavy dose of dark, heavy-metal-infused 90s carnival aesthetic into the arena. For the first time in the series, players are treated to an entirely customizable vehicle creator mode alongside a sprawling roster of eccentric drivers. Iconic anti-hero Sweet Tooth—a demonic clown driving an ice cream truck—actually steals the tournament crown in the storyline prologue by usurping Calypso, locking his former boss in a cage, and hosting the deadly contest himself, setting up a chaotic narrative where classic characters battle to overthrow the new ringmaster.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Twisted Metal 4 refines the high-octane vehicular combat formula by introducing hazard-laden, highly destructible arenas ranging from a neon-lit amusement park to a massive construction site. Players navigate their chosen death-machines while collecting a deadly arsenal of specialized weaponry, including homing missiles, napalm, ricochet bombs, and the devastating freeze-blast. Each vehicle boasts unique attributes handling speed, armor, and turbo capacity, alongside a signature special weapon executable via specific directional command inputs. Unique to this entry is the inclusion of "Boss" vehicles that become playable upon unlocking them, and the implementation of interactive trap-laden environments where players can trigger stage hazards—such as dropping a giant Ferris wheel onto opponents—to gain a tactical advantage in deathmatch and endurance modes.
