Description

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 features the series’ trademark open-ended gameplay, in which the player (playing as a professional skateboarder) completes a number of tasks which result in cash rewards. With money gained, the player can then purchase skill improvements and better skateboards. THPS2 was also the first game in the series to introduce the manual, a skateboarding trick where the performer balances on two wheels. This enables players to string together trick combos. The game also introduced the Noseslide, Tailslide, Bluntslide, Nosebluntside, Feeble, and Overcrook grinds. It was also the first of the Pro Skater games to feature Create-a-Skater and Park Editor features, now staples in the series.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Overview & History

Originally exploding onto home consoles in the year 2000 by Neversoft and Activision, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 fundamentally redefined extreme sports gaming. While its legacy is tied to PlayStation and PC ports, its enduring footprint extends into arcade adaptations and browser-playable revivals that capture the precise essence of late-90s skate culture. Rather than following a traditional narrative, the game challenges players to build an iconic professional skateboarding career. You select from legendary pros like Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, and Bucky Lasek, traveling through legendary, vibrant urban environments ranging from the sun-drenched School II to the gritty Hangar. The objective in each two-minute run is to rack up astronomical high scores by completing specific goals, finding hidden tapes, and spelling S-K-A-T-E, all while jamming to an unforgettable, genre-defining punk and hip-hop soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

THPS 2 revolutionized the franchise and the genre entirely by introducing the Manual mechanic, allowing players to link flatland wheelies between vert ramps and grind combos to achieve endless, gravity-defying point chains. The control scheme relies on context-sensitive mapping: holding specific directional buttons while tapping jump executes distinct grab tricks (Indy, Melon), flip tricks (Kickflip, Heelflip), and lip tricks on coping. The physics engine rewards momentum management and precise landing angles; bailing by slamming flat on the pavement wipes out your accumulated multiplier. Furthermore, the robust Create-A-Skater and Park Editor modes offered unprecedented creativity, letting players design custom skateparks obstacle-by-obstacle to share with friends, making it a masterclass in arcade design.
