Description

A port of the arcade shooter of the same name, Kikikai-kai: Dotou Hen puts you in the shoes of Shinto priestess Sayo, as she traverses feudal Japan in hopes of rescuing the ancient spirits of luck that have been taken captive by a collection of monsters straight out of Japanese folklore.

The game plays as a scrolling top-down shooter with complete freedom of movement, which allows for maze-like stages that Sayo must clear of enemies using her ceremonial baton and her mystic energies. The game features two-player “hotseat” gameplay in which the 2nd player takes over when the first one loses a life, longer levels than the arcade version, and modifies the gameplay mechanics somewhat by including a life bar and finite ammo.

Kikikai-kai: Dotou Hen

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by Taito for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), Kikikai-kai: Dotou Hen (often translated as "Ghost World: Turbulent Episode") serves as a radical sequel and reimagining of Taito's 1986 arcade hit. Unlike the top-down, fixed-screen style of the original coin-op, this FDS port shifts the perspective into a pseudo-3D, rear-view scrolling action game. Players once again step into the traditional robes of Sayo-chan, a courageous Shinto shrine maiden (Shrine Maiden Sayo), on a desperate quest to rescue the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) who have been kidnapped by a malevolent horde of Yokai. Capitalizing on the rewriteable magnetic disk format of the FDS, the game incorporates unique loading sequences, distinct save features, and expanded progression maps that pushed the hardware limits of Nintendo’s add-on system.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its arcade predecessor, Dotou Hen plays as an over-the-shoulder, forward-scrolling runner where Sayo-chan constantly moves deeper into haunted, atmospheric Japanese folklore landscapes. Enemies approach from the horizon, requiring precise depth perception and timing. Sayo's primary offense relies on her sacred Gohei wand to deal melee damage and paper ofuda talismans for ranged attacks. Along her perilous journey, she encounters hidden bonus areas, merchant shops, and challenging sub-bosses inspired by classic Japanese mythology. The game famously introduces a stamina and currency system where collecting monetary items allows players to upgrade their magical abilities and purchase vital restorative items between intense stages, blending arcade reflex action with light role-playing elements.
