Description

Galaxian is a shoot ’em up in which the player is at the bottom of the screen, with an arrangement of aliens at the top. The player moves left and right to aim at an alien, then shoots a bullet up the screen, and the alien it hits is killed. The aliens are classed as Drones, Emissaries, Hornets and Commanders, with those higher up the screen scoring more points when destroyed. At set intervals an enemy will move down the screen towards you, escorting a bomber, which is a moment of high danger. Clear a wave and another is generated.

Galaxian

Overview & History

Originally released by Namco in arcades as a vibrant answer to Space Invaders, *Galaxian* made its triumphant leap to the Famicom Disk System (FDS) in 1984. Utilizing the unique floppy disk medium, this home port brought arcade-accurate colors, crisp audio via the RP2A03 sound chip, and seamless loading times directly into Japanese living rooms. Unlike the static alien marches of its contemporaries, *Galaxian* introduced a dynamic storyline of interstellar defense, tasking players piloting the flagship *Galaxip* with repelling a relentless swarm of insectoid alien armadas descending in kamikaze dive-bombs from the outer rim.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, *Galaxian* on the FDS redefines fixed-shooter mechanics through aggressive enemy behavior. While the alien fleet hovers in formation at the top of the screen, individual Flagships (the elite red commanders) regularly break rank, looping and swooping down toward your ship accompanied by daring green and blue escort fighters. These diving attackers are exceptionally lethal, requiring precise timing to blast out of the sky. Players are armed with a single-shot laser cannon mounted on the bottom of the screen; however, unlike later sequels such as *Galaga*, you cannot rapid-fire—if your missile is currently on screen, you must wait for it to hit an alien or vanish off the top before firing again. Score bonuses multiply exponentially when you manage to shoot a flagship while it is actively escorting armed minions, adding a high-risk tactical layer to every wave.
