Description

The Goonies is based on a movie of the same name from 1985. A group of youngsters from a neighborhood called the “Goon Docks” are trying to find the lost treasure of One-Eyed Willie to prevent the foreclosure of their houses. Unfortunately, the treasure is buried under the hide-out of the infamous Fratelli gang, a family of ruthless criminals who are on the run from the law. You play as the asthmatic Mikey, who must find the treasure and save the other Goonies before time runs out.

The game consists of six levels. In each level, you must collect three keys to advance to the next area. These can be found by blowing open doors with bombs that are dropped by enemies. Also hidden behind doors are power-ups and other Goonies to rescue. Trying to stop you are enemies such as rats, skeletons, and even members of the Fratelli Gang. Bonus points can be gained by picking up diamonds and other valuables, rescuing the other Goonies, or by dispatching enemies with your slingshot or kicking them.

Goonies

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1986 by Konami for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), The Goonies is a distinct platforming adaptation of the Richard Donner film, completely separate from Data East's better-known arcade and NES iterations. Capitalizing on the FDS format, the game utilized rewritable floppy disks, allowing for quick load times and unique chiptune arrangements of Cyndi Lauper’s iconic theme song. The storyline places you in the oversized shoes of Mikey, who must navigate a sprawling underground cave network beneath the Fratelli hideout. Your overarching quest is not just to escape, but to rescue your fellow Goonie friends—Data, Chunk, Mouth, Stef, Andy, and Brand—who are trapped and guarded behind locked doors across various multi-screen stages. Along the way, you must collect essential items like bombs, the slingshot, and the hyper slingshot to blast through cracked walls and fend off rats, bats, and Fratelli henchmen.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear platformers, The Goonies incorporates heavy puzzle-solving elements. Each level is viewed through a single-screen layout where you must locate hidden keys to open holding cells containing your friends. Mikey is armed primarily with a kick attack, but he can collect upgrades such as a yoyo and bombs to clear obstacles and defeat enemies. Items are cleverly hidden inside masonry blocks that must be destroyed with explosives. Furthermore, collecting musical notes boosts your score and triggers invincibility or extra lives. Careful resource management of bombs is crucial, as getting stuck without explosives to break a blocking wall means restarting the stage. The game's distinct vertical and horizontal room-flipping design requires precise jumping and strategic pacing to master the treacherous subterranean traps.
