Description

In Clu Clu Land, the player is an female balloonfish named Bubbles who swims around in a maze trying to uncover all the golden Ingots.

Clu Clu Land’s story starts with a type of sea urchin, the Unira, stealing all of the treasures in the underwater kingdom of Clu Clu Land. Bubbles, the heroine, sets out to retrieve the treasure. The object of the game is to uncover all the gold ingots in each stage while avoiding the Unira and Black Holes. Ingots usually form a shape such as a heart or a mushroom. The only way Bubbles can turn around to change directions is by means of Turning Posts located throughout the stages. Bubbles can stun the Unira by using a Sound Wave. When they are stunned, Bubbles can push them into a wall to get rid of them and receive points. If Bubbles is hurt by the Unira, she will lose a life. A life is also lost when Bubbles falls into a Black Hole, or when time runs out. The game ends if Bubbles has lost all her lives.

In later levels, the player must pass over the ingots an odd number of times to uncover them, as they will alternate between their uncovered side and a dull side.

The Famicom Disk version is based on Vs. Clu Clu Land which was released for the coin-op Nintendo Vs. System. It contained twice as many puzzles, a new enemy (Boss Unira), different level themes, and some other adjusted game features.

This is the last licensed game that was released for the Famicom Disk System. Because of this it is arguably the rarest Famicom Disk system game and sells for a large amount of money.

Clu Clu Land

Overview & History

Originally released in arcades before receiving an enhanced port for the Family Computer Disk System in 1986, Clu Clu Land (often known in Japan as Balloon Fight's quirky sibling) drops players into a surreal underwater maze where the wicked Unate treasure has been pilfered by the greedy Uni. You control Bubbles, a plucky yellow bubble-creature, on a mission to unearth hidden golden ingots across a series of increasingly frantic single-screen stages. The Famicom Disk System version offered the advantage of saving high scores and smooth disk-loading times, bringing this bizarre puzzle-action hybrid into the living rooms of frantic Japanese gamers looking for reflex-driven challenges distinct from standard platformers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional maze games, Bubbles cannot turn around freely on the grid. Instead, she constantly spins forward in the direction she is facing. To navigate the grid of pegs, players must launch Bubbles using magnetic posts strategically placed throughout the stage. Grabbing a post and letting go at the correct orbital angle slingshots her across open corridors. The core gameplay loop revolves around tracing invisible outlines of golden shapes. As Bubbles skates over the correct pairs of pegs, a portion of the hidden image flashes on screen, revealing the treasure. Hazards include rolling green urchins and timed countdowns that summon the fearsome Bora. To survive, players can stun enemies using a sonic soundwave attack or manipulate turning wheels that alter the gravitational flow of the maze, adding layers of tactical spatial awareness to the relentless kinetic momentum.
