Description

A puzzle game in which you must control a potato character and navigate mazes by pushing blocks and solving puzzles to rescue his vegetable friends in a deep labyrinth.

Puzzle Boys

Overview & History

Developed by Atlus and published by Nippon Computer Systems for the Famicom Disk System in 1989, Puzzle Boys is a charming yet diabolically challenging top-down puzzle-platformer. Later ported globally to the PC Engine and Game Boy as Boxyboy, the FDS original holds a special place in retro gaming history due to its unique utilization of the rewritable disk format, featuring smooth tile-based grid movement and an atmospheric chiptune soundtrack. The storyline centers on a squad of energetic, helmeted construction worker heroes who must navigate labyrinthine industrial levels, pushing, pulling, and detonating crates to clear paths and rescue trapped teammates before time expires.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game operates on a strict single-screen grid system where players must strategically manipulate various types of blocks—wooden crates, heavy steel containers, and volatile explosives—to solve intricate environmental puzzles. Players can walk around the grid, push blocks forward, or pull them backward, but must be extremely cautious not to trap themselves in corners or crush crucial pathways. As you progress through the game's dozens of stages, mechanics evolve to introduce ticking time-bomb crates that must be navigated with precise timing, directional arrows that alter block sliding momentum, and locked gates requiring specific keys. Managing spatial awareness and planning your moves several steps in advance is vital, as a single wrong push often results in an uncompletable board, forcing players to use the manual restart function.
