Description

Putt Putt Golf by Pack-In-Video is one of many golf games for the Famicom and the Famicom Disk System, but one of the few to take players through an abstract world rather than an approximation of a real golf course. The goal of each stage is to reach the hole on the green and pot the ball in as few strokes as possible, but each of the courses are covered with various obstacles – some animated, some stationary. The player must navigate around them (or use them to their advantage, in some cases) in order to achieve the best score.

Putt Putt Golf

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by Victor Musical Industries for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), Putt Putt Golf is an early, highly distinct take on miniature golf that capitalized on the rewritable magnetic media format of Nintendo's peripheral. Unlike standard golf simulators of the era, this title embraces a whimsical, arcade-like approach to the sport, featuring a bizarre storyline where your unnamed golfer must traverse increasingly surreal, hazard-filled fantasy courses to win the heart of a local princess trapped in a clubhouse trophy case. Utilizing the FDS's quick loading times and unique audio capabilities, the game offered vibrant, pastel-hued pixel art and catchy chiptune melodies that stood out from standard ROM cartridges of the late 80s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional golf games that rely on a standard three-click power meter, Putt Putt Golf introduces a unique real-time momentum system. Players must select their club and then carefully gauge a swinging pendulum meter where timing dictates the strike's velocity and trajectory. The courses are packed with whimsical hazards, including magnetized bumpers, moving windmills, warp pipes, and slippery ice patches that require precise bounce calculations rather than raw power. Character animations are surprisingly expressive; your golfer reacts with comical dismay to a missed putt or dances enthusiastically upon sinking a hole-in-one. With nine distinct themed courses ranging from haunted castles to futuristic neon tracks, players must master slope reads, wind resistance, and gravity wells to conquer the par.
