Description

Every hundred years, the dark vampire known as Dracula resurrects and terrorizes the land. A vampire hunter named Simon Belmont bravely ventures into the Count’s mansion in order to defeat him. Along the way he’ll have to defeat skeletons, bats, fishmen, medusa heads and other evil creatures.

Castlevania is a side-scrolling platform action game. The player takes the role of Simon Belmont, who is able to jump and crack his whip directly in front of him. Power-ups can be obtained by defeating enemies or by whipping candles that appear in the castle. One such power-up increases the power and length of Simon’s whip. Different weapons can be gathered which consume hearts when used, these hearts can also be collected from monsters and candles. Additionally, some walls will hide secrets such as the health-restorative turkey or the Double and Triple shot abilities for the weapons Simon has collected. At the end of each section of the castle is a boss, which must be defeated. Progression through the castle eventually leads to a confrontation with Count Dracula himself.

Akumajou Dracula

Overview & History

Released in 1986 by Konami exclusively for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), Akumajou Dracula is the seminal gothic horror platformer that birthed a legendary franchise. Utilizing the FDS’s floppy disk format, the game pioneered features later adopted by its cartridge adaptations, including a built-in save-battery data feature and an atmospheric intermission loading screen featuring the grim reaper pacing across a graveyard between stages. Players assume the mantle of Simon Belmont, a legendary whip-wielding vampire hunter who must infiltrate Count Dracula’s labyrinthine Transylvanian castle during the year 1691. Armed with his ancestral weapon, the Vampire Killer whip, Simon navigates six treacherous stages filled with classic universal monsters like Medusa, Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Grim Reaper, all set to an iconic chiptune soundtrack composed by Harumi Koike and Shotaro Habu that establishes the series' distinct baroque musical identity.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its Western NES counterpart, the Famicom Disk System version benefits from improved audio fidelity via the RP2C33 custom sound chip, offering richer waveforms for tracks like "Vampire Killer" and "Stalker." The gameplay is defined by deliberate, commitment-heavy platforming physics; Simon cannot alter his trajectory mid-jump, requiring absolute precision when timing leaps over bottomless pits and moving platforms. The core mechanic revolves around upgrading the Vampire Killer whip through two distinct power-up stages—from a short leather lash to a longer chain whip—by collecting hidden hearts dropped by defeated candles and enemies. These hearts also function as ammunition for sub-weapons concealed within the castle's architecture, including the boomerang-like cross, holy water flasks that freeze enemies in flames, bouncing daggers, and the legendary stop-watch. Progression is strictly linear, divided into distinct blocks per stage culminating in intense boss battles, with the FDS saving system allowing players to resume their grueling journey without resorting to archaic password strings.
