Description

Cocona World is a storybook-styled fantasy adventure game that is superficially similar to The Legend of Zelda and the other top-down action-adventure games that were inspired by it. The player controls a young witch exploring a fantasy land filled with creatures both friendly and hostile. The game contains far less action than others of its ilk, emphasizing exploration and puzzle solving instead. There are also minigames to be found across Cocona World as well.

Cocona World was the first Famicom game to be developed by Japanese software creators SOFEL. They would continue producing games for Nintendo consoles until the mid-90s.

Cocona World

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by Tokyo Shoseki for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), Cocona World is a delightfully bizarre and largely forgotten platform-adventure game. Capitalizing on the rewritable magnetic disk format, Tokyo Shoseki crafted a title deeply tied to educational and whimsical concepts, starring a quirky protagonist named Cocona. Navigating the unique hardware limitations and audio advantages of the FDS sound chip, the game presents a vibrant yet surreal pastel aesthetic. Though it never received a Western localization or subsequent re-releases on modern virtual consoles, Cocona World remains a fascinating collector's item and a testament to the experimental era of mid-1980s Famicom software.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The storyline follows Cocona on a surreal quest through fantastical, dream-like realms to rescue captured friendly spirits from mischievous clockwork goblins. Gameplay is divided into distinct single-screen and multi-directional scrolling platform stages. Unlike standard action platformers of the era, Cocona utilizes a unique bubble-blowing mechanic rather than a traditional sword or gun. By pressing the action button, Cocona blows floating spheres that can trap enemies. Once trapped, players must jump on or kick the bubbles to permanently eliminate foes, reminiscent of classic arcade hits like *Bubble Bobble*, but infused with unique gravity physics. Additionally, players must collect hidden puzzle pieces scattered across each level to unlock exit gates, adding an exploration-heavy puzzle element to the platforming action.
