Description
Eggerland is the first Eggerland game for a Nintendo console and the third game in the series overall, after Eggerland Mystery 1 and 2 for the MSX. Much of the game’s resources and levels actually come from Eggerland Mystery 2, though there’s a lot of extra elements as well. The series would become better known in the West as Adventures of Lolo.
The game features Prince Lolo and his attempts to rescue his girlfriend Lala from the diabolical King Egger by solving a series of puzzle rooms involving collecting hearts and avoiding enemies.
This game is of the “labyrinth” model of Eggerland games which, unlike the sequential “tower” format evident in the Adventures of Lolo series, provides the player with non-linear branching paths to follow in the form of multiple exits for each stage. Besides that, the usual rules apply: Lolo must find and collect all the heart icons in a given stage and then reach an exit, though it’s worth keeping in mind that many of the monsters are completely inert until the last heart icon is collected, at which point they wake up and become very dangerous. As well as ensuring that they are able to reach all the heart icons, the player must also make sure to prepare a safe path to the exit for when the monsters awake.
Egger Land
Overview & History
Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by HAL Laboratory for the Famicom Disk System, Egger Land marks a pivotal evolution in the beloved puzzle-strategy franchise featuring the iconic spherical hero, Lolo. Following the computer hit Tower of Babel and MSX predecessors, this Disk System entry refined the top-down grid-based puzzle design that later inspired the global NES classic Adventures of Lolo. The storyline centers on Lolo embarking on a perilous rescue mission through a sprawling, monster-infested castle to save his kidnapped companion, Lala, from the clutches of the evil King Egger. Utilizing the rewritable Famicom Disk System format, the game offered a compact yet fiendishly challenging adventure that tested spatial reasoning and resource management across dozens of tightly constructed chambers.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike standard action titles, Egger Land is a pure puzzle game where timing, room navigation, and enemy manipulation dictate success. Lolo must collect all the Heart Framers scattered across each single-screen chamber to unlock the treasure chest, which in turn opens the exit door. Along the way, Lolo can collect and deploy up to two Power Chest items, granting him finite ammo of magic shots. These magic shots temporarily encase roaming enemies like Medusas, Leeers, and Skull Monsters into defenseless eggs, which Lolo can then push around the grid to use as stepping stones across water, or position as strategic shields against deadly projectile-firing foes. The game introduces intricate environmental hazards, including directional arrows on the floor, moving bridges, and tricky boulder placements. Because every screen is a self-contained logic puzzle, a single miscalculated push of an egg or wasted magic shot often results in an inescapable trap, forcing Lolo to sacrifice a life and instantly restart the room using the Select button.
