Donkey Kong

Overview & History

Released in December 1988 by Nintendo for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), this definitive port of the legendary arcade classic brought the iconic rivalry between Mario (then known as Jumpman) and the titular giant ape to Nintendo’s rewritable floppy disk format. While previous cartridge versions had to omit entire stages due to ROM size constraints, the FDS release capitalized on the disk's larger storage capacity to deliver a much more complete, arcade-accurate experience, complete with the famous "Pie Factory" stage that was famously missing from the original NES cartridge. The storyline remains a timeless rescue mission: the mischievous gorilla Donkey Kong has kidnapped Mario's girlfriend, Pauline, and dragged her up a perilous, multi-tiered construction site. It is up to the plucky carpenter to dodge an onslaught of rolling barrels, bouncing fireballs, and mechanical springs to save her. Beyond its historical significance, the FDS version features enhanced audio fidelity utilizing the system's unique RP2A03 sound chip capabilities for richer, crisper sound effects and bouncy chiptune melodies that define the golden age of arcade gaming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the later, heavily combat-focused platformers, Donkey Kong is a pure test of spatial awareness, timing, and environmental puzzle-solving across four distinct single-screen stages. Players control Mario's movement with pixel-precise platforming physics, utilizing a jump button to clear obstacles, barrels, and enemies. A defining mechanical quirk of this version is Mario's vulnerability to long falls; jumping from too high a ledge results in a comical fall and the loss of a life, forcing players to carefully plot their vertical ascents using ladders and girders. Stage one tasks Mario with scaling a barrel-strewn skyscraper. Stage two introduces the missing "Pie Factory" (or cement factory), where bouncing conveyor belts and sliding weights must be traversed. Stage three requires Mario to ride moving elevators while evading leaping fireballs. Finally, the climax of each loop takes place on the rivet stage, where Mario must remove eight yellow support bolts by running over them, causing Donkey Kong to crash downward and clear the stage. Scoring relies heavily on collecting Pauline's dropped items—such as hats, parasols, and purses—and completing levels quickly before the countdown timer reaches zero.
