Description

Golf is a sports-simulation video game released in 1984 for the NES. The golfer is a mustached man who resembles Mario. The original Famicom game was ported to the Famicom Disk System in 1986.

The player one character wears a white shirt and shoes with blue pants and uses a white ball, while the player two character wears a red shirt and shoes with black pants and uses a red ball. The user must first decide whether to play single stroke play or the two player selections of doubles stroke play or match play. The user is then placed at the tee of the first hole of eighteen.

It was the first golf game to feature a power/accuracy bar for swinging the club. The power bar method has been used in most golf games since.

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo in 1986 exclusively for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), this magnetic disk iteration refined the seminal 1984 NES classic by leveraging the storage medium to save player statistics and stroke histories. While there is no narrative storyline to speak of—your singular drive is conquering the undulating 18-hole championship course—the game serves as an essential milestone in sports game history, directly overseen by Shigeru Miyamoto and laying the mechanical groundwork for the beloved *Mario Golf* franchise.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike top-down golf predecessors, this FDS version utilizes a vibrant, scrolling horizontal perspective that switches to a green-focused putting view as you approach the pin. Players choose from a specialized bag of clubs, including woods, irons, and a putter, each dictating distance and trajectory. The core gameplay revolves around a remarkably precise three-click swing meter: the first click initiates the backswing, the second determines power at the top of the arc, and the third dictates accuracy upon impact. Mistiming the final click introduces a severe hook or slice, heavily penalizing players who fail to account for the persistent wind speed and direction displayed on the HUD. Navigating treacherous sand bunkers, dense roughs, and watery hazards demands meticulous club selection and tactical green-reading, turning every hole into a tense physics puzzle.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Aim shots, select clubs, and navigate menus
