Description

Knight Move is a chess-based puzzle/strategy game from famed Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov in which the player has to traverse a chessboard using a knight’s erratic L-shaped movement to collect hearts. While collecting hearts, the player may stand on the same square up to three times – after which the square disappears. These pitfalls will instantly end the game if the knight lands on them, but at the same time are the only way to score points: Collecting the heart will repair any holes and award points for each one, after which the heart moves to a new space and the game continues. The knight is always moving towards the spot indicated by the player (or to a random default square if the player hasn’t acted) and will continue to move faster as the game progresses. This makes it less easy to plan out moves ahead of time and, eventually, difficult to aim the knight in the desired direction before the next move occurs.

There is also a harder mode: Type B. In this mode the player must collect numerous hearts before the board’s gaps are repaired and each heart has a timer: this is the number of moves the knight can make before the heart vanishes and a new one appears elsewhere.

Knight Move

Overview & History

Released in 1990 exclusively in Japan for the Famicom Disk System by Hudson Soft, Knight Move is a delightfully devious puzzle-platformer that reimagines the movement mechanics of chess. Eschewing traditional heroic action, the game tasks players with guiding a living chess Knight through increasingly labyrinthine stages suspended in mid-air. Capitalizing on the rewritable nature of the Disk System, Hudson Soft delivered a niche, intellectually demanding title that required players to master geometry and spatial reasoning rather than quick reflexes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core mechanic of Knight Move revolves entirely around the L-shaped jumping pattern of the Knight from chess. Navigating the floating, isometric platforms requires precise foresight, as every single step you take permanently crumbles the tile beneath your hooves. The storyline is lighthearted yet demanding: your solitary Knight must collect all scattered glowing orbs across dozens of multi-tiered floating castles while avoiding bizarre enemies that mimic your movements or alter the terrain. Because you cannot step backward onto the same tile or make standard orthogonal moves, a single miscalculated leap plunges your noble steed into the abyss, forcing a restart. Special panels introduced in later levels—such as teleporters, reverse-gravity zones, and crumbling bridge blocks—drastically escalate the strategic complexity, turning each screen into a logic grid where forward-thinking is the ultimate weapon.
