Description

A long time ago, people from Ferikusu could communicate with the gods and divine spirits. The king of the kingdom is now looking for a young man to marry his daughter, the royal princess. Many contestants are selected and a tournament is organized to decide of the new prince. However, before the end or the ceremony, an evil magician sends the last hero, the one the princess has fallen in love with, to an unknown and desolated world. He also quickly realizes that he fell under a terrible curse, and he has been turned into a weird creature. The only item he has left is a magic bracelet the princess gave him. The player takes control of the lost prince and his journey will take him back to where he came from, confront the evil magician and marry the princess he loves. Each stage starts with a short animation (called a “visual stage”) which unfolds the story as the game progresses. The rest of the game follows a classic top-view action formula, where the hero defeats all kind of enemies with the help of his magic powers. Sometimes, special items can be found under tree logs or rocks.

Maerchen Veil for Famicom Disk System combines Maerchen Veil I and Maerchen Veil II from the MSX into one re-designed game. The story includes both parts, evolving through still-screen scenes between stages. Many of the stages are vastly different, with a closer viewpoint, and new types of enemies, terrain and hazards. The difficulty level of this release is also lower compared to the original versions.

Released by System Soft in 1987 exclusively for the Family Computer Disk System (FDS), Maerchen Veil (also known as Märchen Veil) is a surreal, whimsical action-adventure born from an earlier PC project. Distinguished by its bizarre, dream-like aesthetic and ethereal atmosphere, the game casts players as Princess Romina—or Prince Hans in alternate versions—who has been mysteriously sucked into a bizarre fantasy dimension. Unlike standard linear platformers of the 80s, the FDS iteration refined the overhead and multi-directional scrolling mechanics to create a bewildering maze of floating islands, surreal flora, and clockwork nightmares. Utilizing the rewriteable floppy format of the Disk System, the game offered a uniquely expansive world packed with hidden secrets, cryptic NPCs, and haunting chiptune melodies that cemented its status as a distinct cult classic of the FDS library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Maerchen Veil plays out from a top-down perspective where exploration and combat intertwine. Players navigate Romina through sprawling, labyrinthine stages filled with eccentric enemies ranging from bouncing teacups to aggressive woodland beasts. The core gameplay loop revolves around collecting magical items and relics scattered across the map to unlock previously inaccessible paths. Combat is direct yet cautious, requiring players to time their strikes carefully against erratic enemy movement patterns. Additionally, the game features a dynamic difficulty and status system influenced by collected treasures, altering Romina's combat efficacy and movement speed as players delve deeper into the subconscious labyrinth. Environmental hazards, crumbling platforms, and shifting pathways demand both sharp reflexes and a keen memory to conquer the game's abstract realms.
