Description

The game takes place in India, where a young man’s significant-other is kidnapped by an evil wizard. He must then tackle the four areas of the labyrinth temple of Dababa to rescue her.

In order to accomplish this task, the player cannot simple move across the floor. Rather, the player and all of the enemies hop from one square tile to another, throughout the game. In a majority of stages, the player must uncover the seals which will unlock the door to the next stage by leaping on to the particular tiles which keep the seals concealed. Not every door will take the player forward, however, as some doors are trick doors that may take the player to a previous stage. In some stages, the player must simply survive the onslaught of enemies, while in others, the player is racing against the clock.

Meikyuu Jiin Dababa

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by Konami for the Famicom Disk System, Meikyuu Jiin Dababa (Maze Temple Dababa) is an eccentric, vertically scrolling action-adventure deeply steeped in surreal, ancient-civilization mythology. Developed during Konami's golden 8-bit era, the game stands out for its bizarre aesthetic blending Mesoamerican and Egyptian architectural motifs with whimsical, anime-inspired character design. Players control Dababa, a stout temple explorer on a perilous quest to retrieve stolen sacred artifacts from the bowels of a treacherous labyrinth, fending off grotesque stone deities, hovering phantoms, and mechanical traps across relentless upward-climbing stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional side-scrolling platformers of the era, Meikyuu Jiin Dababa employs a continuous auto-scrolling upward vertical structure, forcing the player to maintain a frantic pace while solving environmental puzzles and avoiding bottomless pits or crushing ceilings. Dababa’s primary offensive capability relies on throwing magical boomerangs or sacred disks to neutralize approaching enemies and smash through crumbling stone barriers. Along the vertical ascent, players must collect glowing gems to upgrade their throwing power and uncover hidden shrines that grant temporary invincibility or score multipliers. The game's difficulty curve is notoriously unforgiving, demanding precise positioning, rapid reflexes, and memorization of enemy spawn patterns, all set against a driving, upbeat chiptune soundtrack characteristic of Konami's finest Famicom compositions.
