Description

Patlabor: The Mobile Police – Dai 2 Shoutai Shutsudou Seyo! is an action-platformer-shooter game from Bandai and yet another licensed game from the publishing giant. In this case, it is an adaptation of the anime and manga of the same name.

Patlabor is a portmanteau of “patrol” and “labor”, with labor being the common name for technologically advanced mechanical walkers used by various construction companies to perform heavy-duty work that a human wouldn’t be capable of achieving on their own. Because more and more of these labors are being hijacked by criminals, an equally powerful force of police-issued labors are commissioned and manned by members of the police force. The show follows Section 2 of the Mobile Police Patlabor division in particular.

The game is divided between side-scrolling platformer/run-and-gun levels and first-person shooter modes in which the player character, in their patlabor, must keep the peace by subduing criminals and other villains, some of which have their own labors.

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1989 by Bandai for the Famicom Disk System, Patlabor: The Mobile Police: Dai 2 Shoutai Shutsudou Seyo! (Second Platoon, Sort Out!) drops players directly into the gritty, industrial early-days of Masami Yuki's beloved sci-fi franchise. Capitalizing on the meteoric rise of the early OVA series, this title avoids being a standard cash-grab by blending visual novel investigation segments with intense, strategic mecha action. Players step into the boots of the Special Vehicles Division 2, tackling rogue Labor robots—heavy construction mechs hijacked by criminals or malfunctioning due to software glitches. Utilizing the rewritable nature of the Disk System format, Bandai crafted a narrative-driven episodic adventure where every district of Tokyo serves as a battleground against both urban crime and bureaucratic red tape.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay is neatly split into two distinct phases. First, players must navigate detective-style briefing phases, talking to characters like Noa Izumi and Captain Goto to gather clues, choose patrol routes, and diagnose the threats at hand. Once deployed, the game transitions into side-scrolling, grid-based tactical action. Controlling the iconic AV-98 Ingram, players manage a stamina and heat gauge while executing character-specific moves. Noa specializes in balanced baton combos and precise stun-gun deployment, while Asuma's tactical prompts assist with crowd control. You must strategically deploy smoke grenades and manage ammo for the 37mm revolver cannon, ensuring collateral damage remains minimal—a failure condition that directly impacts your mission score and story progression.
