Description

Reflect World is a vehicle-based top-down shoot ’em up with a lot of RPG and simulation elements. The player controls a large and formidable tank as it makes its way across a wasteland, destroying enemies and tinkering with its many modes and functions. The game is extremely difficult to understand unless the player is knowledgeable in Japanese (the game was never released outside of Japan), the instruction manual or, preferably, both.

The game was developed and published by East Cube, an obscure Japanese developer that largely focused on Japanese computer games. Reflect World is the only game they ever released on a Nintendo console.

Reflect World

Overview & History

Developed by Vic Tokai and released in 1987 exclusively in Japan for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), Reflect World stands out as a fascinating, albeit punishingly difficult, side-scrolling platformer. Capitalizing on the rewritable magnetic disk format, Vic Tokai crafted an eccentric sci-fi fantasy epic where players take on the role of a futuristic warrior venturing through dimension-warping labyrinths. Due to its limited FDS distribution and niche appeal, it never received an official international port, making it a prized and elusive collector's item today. The game's storyline follows the protagonist as they traverse surreal mirror-image realms to defeat the malevolent entity threatening to shatter the dimensional balance.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Reflect World is defined by its vertically and horizontally expansive platforming stages, punctuated by grueling combat and labyrinthine map design. Unlike standard linear shooters of the era, the game incorporates unique puzzle-platforming elements where players must manipulate reflective surfaces and gravity-shifting zones to progress. The protagonist is armed with a projectile-based weapon capable of piercing grotesque biomechanical enemies, but precision is mandatory due to slippery physics and relentless enemy respawn rates. The FDS hardware allowed for atmospheric SID-chip style audio and distinctive, colorful sprite design that pushed the limits of the hardware. Boss encounters require pattern memorization and mastery of the protagonist's specialized dash and jump trajectories, offering a stiff challenge that rewards perseverance.
