Description

In the game, Allan Colada journeys from his home in the foothills into the mountains to retrieve a remedy for his sister Leela’s fever.

Super Boy Allan is the second game in Sunsoft’s “Intelligence Game” edutainment series for the Famicom Disk System, featuring two different game modes.

The first game mode, which is also the main game, the player has to avoid contact with enemies and push logs in order to solve math-based problems to get extra items. Solving math problems also increases your ability to move several logs at once, which is needed to make further progress.

The second, and much simpler game mode, has the player to finish a 39-steps marathon run by correctly answering simple math questions to accumulate as many points as possible.

Super Boy Allan

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by Sunsoft for the Famicom Disk System (FDS), Super Boy Allan is a fascinating, highly obscure sci-fi platformer that capitalized on the disk format's unique rewriteable storage and quick load times. The storyline follows Allan, a futuristic space cadet tasked with infiltrating a hostile alien labyrinth network to rescue captured colonists and dismantle the central cybernetic core of the invading Xylos armada. Unlike standard 8-bit platformers of the era, the game blends vertical and horizontal labyrinthine exploration with resource management. Because of its late '80s FDS exclusivity and limited print run, the title became a sought-after collector's item, rarely appearing outside of niche retro gaming circles.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay in Super Boy Allan diverges from traditional linear platforming by incorporating maze-like stages where players must collect specific keycards to unlock blast doors while avoiding patrolling biomechanical sentinels. Allan's primary offense is a directional plasma blaster that can be charged for heavier damage against armored boss variants. Additionally, Allan is equipped with a jetpack dash ability, allowing for short bursts of horizontal flight to cross hazardous acid pits and evade homing projectiles. Players must carefully monitor an oxygen and energy meter that continuously depletes while navigating toxic sector zones, forcing a balance between fast-paced platforming and methodical exploration.
