Description

Ultraman 2: Shutsugeki Katoku Tai!! (Loosely translated as Ultraman 2: Sortie Department Group) is an action game developed by Bandai for the Famicom Disk System and published at the end of 1987. As the title implies, it revolves around the Ultraman series that was popular in Japan. However, rather than making Ultraman the focus of this game, it is the defense support team that goes into action whenever Japan is attacked by a giant monster which gets the majority of the game time.

The game takes place in modern Japan, with a bird’s eye view presentation of much of Japan’s metropolis. Players must send a team out to search for, and obtain, a cube which permits the defense team to damage monsters when they appear. Once the cube is found, monsters begin to appear and attack the buildings of Japan. The team must deploy vehicles to help aid in the destruction of these monsters until they have all been defeated. If a monster destroys a critical building, the game is instantly over.

Overview & History

Released in 1987 exclusively in Japan for the Famicom Disk System by Bandai, Ultraman 2: Shutsugeki Katokutai!! serves as a direct sequel to the earlier Famicom release, shifting its focus toward a more strategic, multifaceted representation of the Science Special Search Party (Katokutai). Building on the episodic narrative structure of the classic tokusatsu series, the game places players in the dual role of managing base operations and engaging in real-time tactical combat against iconic kaiju such as Alien Baltan, Red King, and Gomora. Because it utilized the rewritable Famicom Disk System format, Bandai was able to pack the game with distinct phases, ranging from overhead defense minigames where the Katokutai deploys jets like the VTOL Jet-Beetle, to cinematic, side-view showdowns where Hayata transforms into the Silver Giant himself to face off against giant monsters in a race against his dwindling Color Timer.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear action titles of its era, Ultraman 2 divides its gameplay into distinct operational stages. First, players command the Science Patrol in strategic grid-based defense scenarios, intercepting kaiju advances before they breach urban zones. Once Ultraman enters the fray, the gameplay transforms into a timing-heavy, twitch-reaction dueling system. Players must manage Ultraman’s limited energy reserves while executing a repertoire of signature martial arts moves, including flying drop kicks, chops, and throws. Iconic finishing attacks—such as the Specium Ray and Ultra Slash—require exact inputs and situational timing, as missed strikes deplete the remaining Color Timer and risk immediate defeat. The disk format allowed for multiple branching chapters, diverse monster patterns, and atmospheric chiptune renditions of Kunio Miyauchi’s legendary television score, making it a surprisingly deep homage to Tsuburaya Productions' milestone sci-fi franchise.
