Description

In Bomb Jack, the player controls Jack, who must collect all the bombs in order to complete the current round and go onto the next one. This sounds easy, right? Wrong! Making Jack’s task difficult are numerous enemies such as birds, mummies, turtles, and orbs. In each round, collecting a number of bombs results in a bonus coin appearing, and collecting this coin will make the player’s score increase 2 to 4 times. More often than not, the “power ball” appears, and when you collect this, you can defeat enemies and have more time to collect all the bombs. There is also the “E” coin, which gives Jack one additional life, but rarely does this coin appear. The more you progress through the game, the more difficult it becomes, as enemies travel more quickly to get you.

Bomb Jack

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1985 exclusively for their SG-1000 home console, Bomb Jack is a fascinating port of Tehkan’s iconic arcade platformer. While the coin-op original achieved legendary status worldwide, this 8-bit Sega adaptation brought the frantic, high-flying action straight to Japanese living rooms during a pivotal era of console history. Rather than featuring a complex narrative, the game casts players as Jack, a caped superhero whose singular, heroic mission is to leap across international architectural landmarks and defuse a series of strategically planted time bombs before they detonate. Operating under strict hardware limitations compared to its arcade predecessor, Sega's SG-1000 iteration distills the core score-chasing addiction into a bite-sized, challenging package that tests spatial awareness and aerial timing.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where jumping is simply a means of traversing terrain, movement in Bomb Jack is entirely defined by aerial acrobatics. Jack can execute a signature glide by holding down the jump button, allowing players to meticulously float across gaps and manipulate momentum mid-air. The primary objective on each single-screen stage is to collect 24 flashing dynamite sticks. Collecting them in a specific chronological sequence—indicated by a pulsing red bomb—multiplies your score exponentially and spawns valuable bonus power-ups, such as P (extra points), S (speed boost), or E (enemies eliminated). Players must constantly weave past a menagerie of aggressive patrol enemies, including floating mummies, bouncing fireballs, and mechanical birds. Mastering the physics of Jack's jump and learning enemy patrol paths are essential to clearing stages set against famous backdrops like the Sphinx, the Parthenon, and the skyline of New York City.
