The player assumes the role of a spy infiltrating a 30-story building filled with elevators. The player is pursued by enemy agents who appear from behind closed doors. These agents must be dealt with via force or evasion. Successful completion of a level involves collecting all the secret documents and traversing the building from top to bottom. In the lower floors of the building, the elevator systems can be complex enough that puzzle-solving skills are needed. The controls consist of a 4-way joystick and two buttons, one to shoot and the other for jumping and kicking.

Released in 1985 by Sega for their 8-bit home console, the SG-1000, Elevator Action is a fascinating technological port of Taito’s 1983 arcade hit. While the original coin-op utilized specialized hardware, bringing this dense, multi-story infiltration game to Sega's humble SG-1000 hardware required immense programming dexterity. Players step into the trench coat of Agent 301, codenamed Otto, an elite spy tasked with a perilous espionage mission. His objective is deceptively simple yet agonizingly dangerous: infiltrate a towering 30-story commercial building, retrieve secret documents marked by red doors scattered throughout the architectural labyrinth, and successfully escape via the basement garage. Despite the graphical and audio limitations of the SG-1000 console, this port brilliantly preserves the frantic, claustrophobic pacing of the arcade original, cementing its status as a cult-classic collector's item for retro gaming enthusiasts today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around vertical navigation through an intricate cross-section of a skyscraper. Agent Otto must constantly ride elevators, dodge fast-descending express cars, and duck into various doors to locate the classified documents. The building is heavily patrolled by armed enemy agents dressed in business suits who will shoot on sight, chase Otto across floors, or ambush him by emerging from rooms. To survive, Otto can deploy his standard-issue handgun to neutralize foes, leap over lethal gaps, or use environmental hazards to his advantage. Players can crush enemies by dropping heavy elevator cars directly onto their heads, or trigger overhead light fixtures to plunge entire floors into temporary darkness, neutralizing the AI's line of sight. However, timing is everything; miss a jump while riding an elevator roof, or get caught between floors, and Otto suffers an instant loss of life, adding an unforgiving arcade-style challenge to every descent.
