Description

Guzzler is an arcade game developed by Tehkan. It was ported to the SG-1000 by Tsukuda Original and given Othello Multivision branding. To this day the SG-1000 version stands as the only home port of Guzzler.

You play as a character who needs to absorb water to put out fires dotted around a maze. The fires also spawn fire-based enemies which can be defeated in a similar fashion. You can only store up to three shots at one time.

Compared to other SG-1000 games, Guzzler shows some very poor production values. It thrusts you into gameplay without warning (which can result in cheap deaths) and it has a broken pause feature, which although appears to work, will unpause the game after a few seconds. There are only three maps and far fewer enemies than in the arcade version and it is also a much louder game, as the SG-1000 omits a high pitched squeak every time you make a step.

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1983 for their inaugural home console, the SG-1000, Guzzler is an obscure, highly addictive fixed-screen arcade-style action game developed during a time when Sega was aggressively establishing its foothold in the Japanese video game market. While it shares conceptual DNA with contemporary maze-chase and elimination games of the early '80s, *Guzzler* introduces a refreshing fluid-based mechanic that sets it apart from standard dot-munching clones. The simplistic storyline casts the player as a dedicated, pint-sized exterminator tasked with ridding a series of grid-based industrial mazes of relentless, creeping insectoid pests. Armed only with a specialized chemical-spraying apparatus, our nameless hero must methodically navigate each claustrophobic stage, utilizing pressurized streams to neutralize the invading swarm before time expires. Though it never reached the global household-name status of Sega's later masterworks, *Guzzler* remains a fascinating piece of SG-1000 history, showcasing the platform's early capabilities in handling single-screen arcade conversions with colorful, chunky sprite designs and snappy, responsive pacing.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop of Guzzler revolves around resource management and positioning. Unlike standard platformers where enemies are simply jumped over or shot, the player must spray chemicals directly at the bugs to fill up their internal meter. Once an insect is fully saturated, it bloats up and becomes completely immobile, transforming from a deadly hazard into a sliding projectile. The player can then push these bloated bugs across the screen, using them to crush and eliminate other moving pests in a satisfying chain reaction that yields bonus points. Each level presents a static, single-screen maze packed with obstacles, narrow corridors, and dead ends that require careful route planning. As you progress, the enemy types become faster and more aggressive, requiring split-second reflexes to avoid getting cornered. Sound effects are delightfully retro, punctuating every spray, squish, and score tally with authentic early '80s synthetic blips and bops that heighten the frantic arcade atmosphere.
