The player takes control of a motorcyclist who’s in a race to be the first to traverse the United States from the west to the east coast, starting in Los Angeles and ending up in New York City.

Gameplay consists of the player dodging cars and other roadway hazards on their way to the next checkpoint. Players can either accelerate or hit the brakes on their motorcycle so they can avoid getting into an accident. Accidents cause the player to lose fuel and running out of fuel can end the game. So players must keep an eye out on the fuel gauge, which can be refilled by fuel barrels littered throughout each stage. Each car the player passes betters their ranks which increases their score.

The SG-1000 version of the game is one of two SG-1000 releases to see four separate Japanese releases (the other being Monaco GP) – three on cartridge with each of the SG-1000’s box designs, and one on Sega Card. Despite this it did not see a release outside of Japan.

Released by Irem in 1983 as an arcade title before being ported to Sega’s nascent SG-1000 console in 1985, Zippy Race (known in Japan as Gp World) is a quirky, cross-country motorcycle racing game. As one of Sega's early hardware releases, it tasked players with guiding an intrepid rider named Zippy on a multi-stage endurance journey starting from Los Angeles and culminating in New York City. The game stands out in retro gaming history for its ambitious blending of perspective shifts, alternating between a scaling pseudo-3D rear-view highway race and a top-down obstacle avoidance challenge, all while capturing the colorful, chunky aesthetic of early 80s Japanese console ports.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zippy Race divides its gameplay into two distinct phases that test both reflexes and patience. In the primary phase, players navigate a motorcycle down a scrolling highway, dodging rival bikers, errant cars, and roadside hazards while managing fuel consumption and speed. Hitting obstacles or other vehicles results in dramatic crashes that send Zippy flying off his bike, costing precious seconds on the timer. Periodically, the perspective abruptly shifts to a top-down, overhead map view where players must maneuver through tight city streets or hazardous terrain without stalling. To succeed, players must master the throttle, timing their acceleration to weave through heavy traffic bottlenecks and collecting fuel icons to keep the cross-country trip alive across increasingly difficult checkpoints.
