Description

In order to prevent her boyfriend Minto from going to another little girl named Cocco, Papri must collect ten different flowers and return them to her boyfriend’s house. Flowers must be caught in full bloom so that the number of flowers in her possession will increase; catching flowers too early will consider the flowers to be wasted and flowers caught too late will be wilted. Wilted flowers will ruin the bouquet, causing the player to lose half of the flowers.

Bears have a taste for honey and cause the player to lose one of two hearts if one of them attacks the player. However, the honey can be dropped in order to render the bear temporarily harmless to the player. Bees appear as the player’s ally, giving her bonus items occasionally and extra honey if the player catches it on a flower.

Girl's Garden

Overview & History

Released in 1984 for the Sega SG-1000, Girl's Garden holds a historic place in gaming lore as the very first video game designed by Yuji Naka, who would later co-create Sonic the Hedgehog. Developed during Sega's early hardware era, this charming yet deceptively challenging title departs from typical shoot-’em-ups by delivering an innocent, garden-themed collect-a-thon. The storyline follows a pigtailed young girl named Mappy (not to be confused with the Namco mouse) on a romantic quest. Desperate to win the affection of her boyfriend, Ken, she must venture into a sprawling, seasonal maze of blooming flora to gather flowers and craft a massive bouquet for him before time runs out.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds across a top-down, scrolling maze divided into alternating stages of flower-gathering fields and bonus bear-dodging runs. Mappy must navigate the labyrinth to harvest blooming flowers while expertly evading a relentless pack of hostile brown bears and rival suitors. Planting seeds and waiting for them to bloom into gorgeous bouquets is core to the loop, but players must balance cultivation with survival. If a bear catches Mappy, she loses precious flowers and valuable seconds. Every few rounds, the gameplay shifts into a high-speed chase where Mappy must outrun a swarm of angry bears to reach Ken at the bottom of the screen. As stages progress, the mazes grow exponentially more labyrinthine, the bears move faster, and the time limit tightens, requiring precise route-planning and lightning-fast reflexes to secure the ultimate romantic reward.
