Safari Hunting

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1982 exclusively for their debut home video game console, the SG-1000, Safari Hunting represents one of the earliest earnest attempts to bring the thrill of big-game expeditions into the Japanese living room. At a time when arcade ports dominated the market, Sega crafted this original title to showcase the SG-1000's hardware capabilities, capitalizing on the public's fascination with exotic wildlife exploration. While it bypassed Western arcades, the game holds a unique place in retrogaming history as an early blueprint for vertical-scrolling action titles on Sega's first-generation hardware, predating the Master System era by several years.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard stationary hunting gallery shooters of its era, Safari Hunting drops the player directly into a treacherous, scrolling wilderness infested with dangerous fauna. The core gameplay loop requires the hunter to navigate through dense jungles and arid savannas while managing a limited ammunition supply. As the screen auto-scrolls, various African wildlife—ranging from swift antelopes to ferocious lions and charging rhinoceroses—appear from the top and sides of the screen. Players must carefully time their shots, as missing depletes precious bullets, leaving them vulnerable to direct animal attacks that drain the hunter's health bar. Survival demands not just quick reflexes, but strategic target prioritization, separating harmless herbivores from aggressive predators that can trample the player in seconds.

Keyboard Controls
