Description

Borderline (ボーダーライン) is a VIC Dual arcade game developed in 1980 by Sega. It is a shoot-’em-up in which the player controls a red jeep who must destroy the enemy refineries.

Borderline was ported to the SG-1000 in 1983, and has also been released as part of the Sega Ages 2500 series in Japan. The second gameplay section was also recycled for the Atari 2600 release of Thunderground, though instead of driving a jeep the player controls a tank.

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1983 for their debut home console, the SG-1000, *Borderline* is an early, highly ambitious top-down vehicular combat and maze shooter that pre-dates the massive success of the Master System. Designed to test the limits of Sega’s primitive hardware, the game was also ported to the MSX computer and later appeared as an unlockable minigame in the *Yakuza* series. While largely overshadowed by arcade hits of the era, *Borderline* stands out as a fascinating transitional piece, blending the fluid multi-directional scrolling of early shoot-'em-ups with tactical hazard navigation across stark, geometric planetary sectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players pilot an armed reconnaissance vehicle tasked with infiltrating hostile alien defense grids. The game is divided into distinct, alternating stages that require entirely different approaches. In the scrolling traversal phases, players must dodge stationary turrets, moving enemy patrols, and lethal wall collisions while continuously firing forward cannons. The perspective then shifts into enclosed, labyrinthine military bases where precision driving is paramount. Your vehicle is equipped with a dual-purpose laser cannon capable of clearing debris and destroying enemy drones, but ammunition management and split-second dodging are critical for survival. Unlike standard side-scrollers, *Borderline* incorporates a dynamic speed-control mechanic, forcing players to accelerate and decelerate to clear wide chasms and narrow choke points safely.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Steer the vehicle in 8 directions and adjust movement speed
  • Action Keys: Fire lasers / Activate special thrusters
  • Enter: Start / Pause
