Description

Chack’n Pop is considered a predecessor of Bubble Bobble. It is a platform game where a roundish yellow creature, named Chack’n, must fight against Monstas and Mightas in order to reclaim hearts that were stolen during a romantic encounter with Miss Chack’n.

The Monstas themselves hatch from eggs hanging from the ceilings and the Mightas push a rock that is used as the game’s timer. The Monsta eggs have three phases: if it’s blue, it’s completely harmless, if it’s yellow it will pop within 10 seconds and if an egg turns red it will pop almost immediately.

Chack’n uses bombs to blow up the Monstas and their eggs and he also uses them to release the captured hearts from their cages. When the heart is released, it will fly up and destroy the separator block and reveal the exit to the level.

Most versions of the game contain 14 levels to play through, however the Famicom version only includes 9.

Chack'n Pop

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized and released by Taito in Japanese arcades in 1983, Chack'n Pop holds a legendary, foundational place in video game history as the spiritual predecessor to the iconic Bubble Bobble. In 1984, the game was meticulously ported to the Sega SG-1000 by Compile, bringing its frantic single-screen platforming to Sega’s burgeoning home console. The storyline centers on Chack'n, a cute, yellow, bipedal creature resembling a heart with legs, who must navigate a series of underground labyrinthine mazes. His mission is to rescue the captive little "Hearties" imprisoned in various cages by the villainous Montan monsters before a timer runs out. Unlike standard platformers of the era, the SG-1000 iteration captures the arcade's claustrophobic tension, requiring players to master continuous vertical scaling while dodging relentless enemies and avoiding falling ceiling debris.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay mechanic revolves around Chack'n's unique method of attack and movement. Unlike other platforming heroes, Chack'n cannot jump horizontally in mid-air normally; instead, he relies on his remarkable ability to walk indefinitely along ceilings and walls, dangling upside down as he navigates the maze. To clear a stage, Chack'n must drop bombs downward to blast open cages and free the trapped Hearties. Once all Hearties are released, the exit door at the top of the screen unlocks. However, timing is everything: dropping bombs too close to yourself can trap Chack'n in smoke, and letting the stage timer expire unleashes a massive, invincible skull called "Mighty" that hunts the player down mercilessly. Power-ups like the magical hearts and gloves temporarily freeze enemies or grant extra bombs, adding critical layers of strategy to each cramped, single-screen stage.
