Ninja Princess

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1985 for the SG-1000 and ported later as 'Akazu no Ninja' or 'Seishun Scandal', Ninja Princess holds a fascinating place in gaming history as an early precursor to Sega's own Shinobi series. Unlike the stoic male ninja protagonists typical of the era, this game puts players in the silk sandals of Princess Kurumi, a royal heir forced to reclaim her usurped castle from the evil Gyokuro and his wicked ninja clan. Traveling across feudal Japan's picturesque landscapes, Kurumi must rely on ancient shinobi arts rather than royal diplomacy. The game is notable for breaking away from standard side-scrolling conventions by implementing a vertical-scrolling perspective that pushes the player relentlessly upward, blending fast-paced run-and-gun mechanics with traditional ninja tropes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop of Ninja Princess is a relentless test of reflexes. Players navigate vertically scrolling stages filled with hostile samurai, rival kunoichi, and deceptive environmental hazards. Kurumi’s primary offensive tool is an endless supply of throwing stars (shuriken), which she hurls with precision. However, her most iconic defensive and evasive mechanic is the ability to temporarily transform into a magical artifact or use ninjutsu arts to evade overwhelming bullet-hell style projectiles fired by enemy bosses. Unlike many contemporary arcade shooters where players are tethered to the ground, Kurumi has remarkable agility, allowing for swift repositioning. Power-ups scattered throughout the bamboo forests and burning villages enhance her throwing speed and range, turning the royal protagonist into a lethal whirlwind of vengeance across varied thematic stages.
