Description

Faselei! is one of the last titles to be released for the Neo Geo Pocket Color and even features digitised lyrics to the game’s main theme. Heavily story driven, this strategy RPG takes place in a time when mechs known as TS are the weapon of choice for combat. Gameplay revolves around the battles and customising your TS between those battles.

Battles are part turn based and part real-time. The player inputs their actions at the beginning of the turn. The amount of actions they can input is dependant on their type of TS. Once they have finished their selection everything is played out in real-time for the duration of the turn. This makes thinking about what your opponents and allies will do in advance essential before taking your turn.

Faselei!

Overview & History

Developed by SubSonic and published by SNK in 1999 exclusively for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, Faselei! is a tactical, turn-based mecha strategy masterclass that pushes the handheld's hardware to its absolute limits. Set in a gritty future where mercenary armies clash, the storyline follows a young pilot named Louie as he joins the enigmatic group known as the "Faselei" to uncover a sprawling corporate-military conspiracy. Despite critical acclaim for its mature narrative, vibrant isometric graphics, and atmospheric soundtrack composed by Motoi Sakuraba, the game suffered from poor distribution outside of Japan, making original cartridges exceedingly rare collector's items today. It stands as one of the most mechanically ambitious titles on the system, bridging the gap between deep tabletop wargaming and portable Japanese role-playing games.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Faselei! revolutionizes tactical combat by discarding traditional grid-based movement in favor of a unique, sequence-based programming system. Players pilot customizable bipedal robots called "E-SGBs," dictating their actions through a command deck populated by movement chips (such as step forward, turn left, or strafe) and offensive actions. During the planning phase, you must anticipate enemy movements and queue up to five commands before hitting execute, resulting in tense, real-time-like simulations of tactical positioning. Customization is deeply rewarding; completing missions yields credits to purchase heavier armor, sniper rifles, missile pods, and specialized computer chips that expand your command queue capacity. Positioning matters immensely, as attacks from the flanks or rear deal significantly more damage. Character progression is tied to narrative milestones, with Louie and his mercenaries gaining access to advanced chassis types that fundamentally alter your battlefield tactics.
