Picture Puzzle

Overview & History

Developed and published by SNK in 1999 exclusively for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, *Picture Puzzle* (also known regionally as *Picross* or *Nonogram*) is a masterclass in handheld logic gaming. At a time when SNK's iconic 16-bit handheld was heavily associated with arcade-fighting conversions and SNK mascots, this puzzle title offered a cerebral, relaxing palette cleanser. While it didn't feature a sprawling storyline or traditional combat, the game instead challenged players to decipher numerical grid clues to gradually unveil charming 8-bit sprite illustrations of classic SNK characters, vehicles, and items from franchises like *King of Fighters*, *Samurai Shodown*, and *Metal Slug*. Its brilliant blend of classic paint-by-number mechanics with high-contrast color graphics made it a cult classic among handheld puzzle enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around filling in a grid based on numerical hints provided along the top and side of each puzzle. These numbers indicate consecutive blocks of filled squares that must be marked within that row or column. *Picture Puzzle* features multiple difficulty settings, ranging from smaller 5x5 grids suitable for beginners to massive, intricate 15x15 boards that test even veteran logicians. Players utilize a dual-action cursor: one button fills in a square (paint), while the other marks a square with an 'X' (cross out) to signify it is empty, preventing accidental mistakes. A timer and a penalty system track errors, adding a layer of arcade-style tension to an otherwise methodical puzzle-solving experience. Successfully completing a puzzle rewards the player by fully coloring, animating, and archiving the hidden sprite into an in-game gallery.
