Description

X-Men is an arcade game produced by Konami in 1992. It is a side-scrolling beat ’em up based on the Marvel Comics characters of the same name. The character designs of the X-Men and the supervillains in the game are based on the 1989 X-Men pilot episode X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men. In the game, players control one of the six playable X-Men to defeat their enemy Magneto. Konami made a six-player version of the game utilizing two screens housed in a deluxe cabinet.

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1992, X-Men stands as a monumental pillar of the golden age of arcade beat 'em ups. Based loosely on the popular 1989 animated pilot Pryde of the X-Men, the game drops players into a high-stakes battle against humanity's greatest threats. The storyline wastes no time: the nefarious Magneto has kidnapped Professor Charles Xavier and Kitty Pryde, seizing control of New York City and launching nuclear warheads. It falls upon Earth’s premier mutant team to track the Master of Magnetism through city streets, hazardous wastelands, and ultimately into the deep cosmos aboard Asteroid M. Konami’s iconic cabinet design—notably the rare six-player version utilizing dual screens housed in a massive deluxe cabinet—made it an instant social phenomenon in arcades worldwide, cementing its legacy as a cooperative masterpiece.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Supporting up to six simultaneous players in its grandest configuration, the game delivers chaotic, fast-paced side-scrolling action. Players can select from six distinct mutants: Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Dazzler. Each hero boasts a tailored combat rhythm, from Wolverine's rapid claw lunges to Colossus's devastating brute-force grapples. The game utilizes a robust two-button control scheme (Attack and Jump), but pressing both simultaneously unleashes a devastating mutant power attack that clears the screen at the cost of some health. Enemies arrive in endless waves of Sentinels, Pyro, the Blob, and the Juggernaut, pushing cooperative combos and tactical positioning to the absolute limit. Destructible environments and environmental hazards add layers of depth, while power-ups replenish health and grant temporary mutant boosts.
