Description

This is the original version on the Sega System E arcade hardware. M2 released a remake in 2008 on the System 16C board, don’t get the 2 mixed up, they are very different games despite sharing the exact same name.

Opa-Opa is at it again in this zany return to his original homeland some ten years later. Welcome to Fantasy Zone II where perils are great and rewards even greater. During your visit you’ll discover that peace is at stake once again and those who threaten it are more cunning and wicked than before. So beware, the evil Blackhearts are near and they’re not alone. Scores of unusual and seemingly innocent creatures will enthusiastically approach you. But don’t be fooled. They’re not here to help. They’re henchmen for the dark powers of the Blackhearts. And they’ll sabotage every chance you’ve got to protect the warp gates from total ruin. So fight valiantly, because just when you think you’ve made it, the Blackhearts will be waiting.

Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987, Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa stands as a brilliant evolution of its predecessor, originally developed for the Sega System 16 arcade board before being famously ported to the Master System. Eschewing standard linear scrolling shoot-'em-up conventions, this whimsical pastel masterpiece thrusts players back into the pastel-hued alien world to stop the resurrected Menon forces. The storyline follows the sentient, winged spaceship Opa-Opa as he sheds the titular tears to traverse light and dark parallel dimensions, seeking out the corrupting dark cores behind the chaos. Unlike typical arcade shooters of the late '80s, Fantasy Zone II combines frantic horizontal combat with heavy exploratory elements, tasking pilots with clearing all floating generation bases—known as spawners—to trigger intense boss encounters at the end of each stage. Its vibrant art style, catchy tropical-synth soundtrack, and clever risk-reward economy make it an enduring cult classic of the golden age of arcade gaming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around dual-plane navigation and currency management. Players control Opa-Opa using an 8-way joystick and two dedicated action buttons: one for firing forward and another for dropping bombs downward. Defeating enemies yields gold coins, which must be actively collected and spent at the floating "Shop" balloons that intermittently appear. The shop is crucial for survival, offering timed upgrades such as twin-fire lasers, 7-way shots, speed shoes, and heavier payloads like smart bombs or fire bombs. A defining innovation of Fantasy Zone II is its warp system: each level features regular and "dark" zones connected by hidden portals. Clearing bases in the bright world opens rifts to the dark dimension, where enemies are far more aggressive, forcing players to master both realms to achieve a true 100% completion and face the ultimate mastermind.
