Description

This bright and colourful 2D platformer has players controlling a girl named Nico as she explores the Spica star system, armed with a parasol a la Parasol Stars. Her umbrella is a versatile tool that she can use in a variety of different ways: she can slow her fall using it, float across water, use it as a shield to block enemy attacks, or even use it as vaulting pole to fling herself around stages. The bright stages take her through different planets in the Spica system where she encounters many exotic enemies.

Spica Adventure

Overview & History

Released in 2005 by Taito and developed by Dreams, Spica Adventure is a rare, highly inventive arcade platformer running on the Taito Type X hardware. The game follows Nico, a plucky young adventurer equipped with a versatile, sentient umbrella, as she navigates through the whimsical and hazardous floating world of Spica to rescue her missing sister. Despite its charming, vibrant anime aesthetics and unique mechanical hook, it never received a widespread home console port, cementing its status as an elusive, cult-classic coin-op gem cherished by arcade preservationists and platforming enthusiasts alike.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional side-scrollers, Spica Adventure revolves entirely around the multifaceted utility of Nico's umbrella. The umbrella acts simultaneously as a weapon, a shield, a grappling hook, and a parachute. Players can open the parasol to float gently across perilous bottomless pits, deflect incoming projectiles back at enemies, or snag environmental hooks to swing across massive gaps. The stages are fast-paced and vertically oriented, forcing players to master momentum-based movement. Combat involves striking foes directly with the umbrella's tip or hurling heavy objects found in the environment. Additionally, the game features distinct bosses requiring puzzle-platforming logic rather than pure brute-force attacks, keeping the action constantly engaging and delightfully unpredictable.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Nico and aim umbrella angles
  • Action Keys: Attack / Open & Close Umbrella / Grab Objects
  • Enter: Start / Pause
