Description

The Street Fighter EX fighting system uses fighting systems of the Street Fighter II and Street Fighter Alpha series. In many ways, EX still plays like a 2D fighting game, but the linear plane in which characters fight often changes along a 3D battleground. The game uses special moves and super combos familiar or similar to previous games in the series. Like in Alpha and Darkstalkers, the super combo gauge, used to do Super Combos and other moves, was divided into three levels. The game introduces various new features to enhance the player’s combat choices.

Street Fighter EX

Overview & History

Released to arcades in 1996 by Arika in collaboration with Capcom, Street Fighter EX marked a monumental technological leap for the iconic fighting franchise as its first entry rendered entirely in 3D polygons. Utilizing Sony’s ZN-1 arcade hardware, the game successfully translated the beloved 2D spirit of the series into a dynamic three-dimensional plane while retaining classic side-scrolling mechanics. The storyline revolves around a sinister, shadowy syndicate that has kidnapped the martial arts prodigy Genryusai Sakura and orchestrated a clandestine tournament to unearth the ultimate fighters. This narrative framework paved the way for a distinct roster blending legendary veterans like Ryu, Chun-Li, and Ken with an eccentric array of newcomers including the enigmatic ninja Kairi, the telekinetic skull-masked warrior Skullomania, and the explosive boxer D. Dark, deeply expanding the overarching Capcom lore.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard 2D iterations, Street Fighter EX introduces the innovative 'Excel' combo system—a precursor to the Custom Combos seen in later franchise entries—allowing players to chain normal attacks into special moves with blistering, frame-canceling speed. The combat engine also features the Guard Break mechanic, executed by pressing heavy punch and heavy kick simultaneously, which shatters an opponent's blocking stance at the cost of a Super Combo gauge segment. Veteran character command lists were faithfully adapted into 3D space, empowering Ryu to launch devastating Hadokens and Shoryukens, while newcomers like Doctrine Dark introduced terrifying trap-based explosive wire setups. The rhythmic timing required to execute Super Combos and intermediate chain cancels demands precise execution, rewarding mastery of both spacing and recovery frames.
