Description
San Drad, California, has been overrun by the Aliens, and the cybernetically-enhanced Major Dutch Schaefer and Lieutenant Linn Kurosawa have been abandoned by their superiors and are cornered by a swarm of the Alien drones. Before they can be killed, a pair of the Predators appear and destroy the Aliens. The Predators offer an alliance with the two humans in order to stop the Alien infestation.
The players take control of up to three of four characters: Dutch, Linn, a Predator hunter, and a Predator warrior, and battle the Aliens through several environments. In the process, the characters discover that the Alien presence on Earth is the result of an experiment headed by a renegade General Bush of the U.S. Colonial Marines in conjunction with the Weyland-Yutani corporation. They destroy the Alien hive by crashing a military ship into San Drad, causing a huge explosion. The Predator warrior then gives his wrist blades to Dutch and Linn in recognition of their skills as warriors, before the Predators depart back into space.
Alien vs. Predator
Overview & History
Released by Capcom in 1994, Alien vs. Predator stands as a monumental peak in the golden age of arcade beat-'em-ups. Loosely inspired by early comic book crossovers and the iconic sci-fi cinematic universe, the storyline thrusts players into a dystopian San Francisco overrun by xenomorphs. With Weyland-Yutani bio-weapons wreaking havoc, two elite Colonial Marines—Dutch Schaefer (sporting a cybernetic arm) and Linn Kurosawa—forging an uneasy, desperate alliance with two Predator warriors, Hunter and Warrior, to purge the infestation and stop a rogue military faction. Utilizing Capcom's CP System II hardware, the game delivered staggering, detailed sprite work, cinematic scaling, and a pulsating electronic soundtrack that perfectly captured the claustrophobic dread and high-octane action of the source material.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike standard brawlers of the era, AvP introduced remarkable depth through its varied character arsenals. Players can choose between agile melee fighters and heavy-hitting firearm specialists. Linn and the Predator warriors excel at rapid combos and martial arts, while Dutch wields a devastating smart-gun and heavy physical strikes. The control layout features a standard 3-button setup—Attack, Jump, and Shoot—which can be chained into sliding tackles, aerial shoulder charges, and devastating grappling throws. A unique mechanic allows players to collect and switch between temporary ranged weapons dropped by enemies, ranging from flamethrowers and smart-guns to plasma pistols. Furthermore, pulling off specific directional inputs triggers character-exclusive special moves, such as Dutch's overhead piledriver or the Predator's cloaking counter-attacks, making cooperative play an absolute masterclass in chaotic crowd control.
