Marvel Super Heroes

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1995 for the CP System II arcade hardware, Marvel Super Heroes stands as a monumental milestone in the fighting game genre, later seeing ports to the Sega Saturn and PlayStation. Loosely adapting Jim Starlin’s iconic 1991 comic crossover The Infinity Gauntlet, the overarching storyline pits a roster of Earth's mightiest defenders and cosmic entities against the mad titan Thanos, who seeks to assemble all six Infinity Gems to rewrite reality. Players traverse diverse cosmic stages, battling rival heroes and villains alike before confronting Thanos himself in his domain.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Building upon the foundational framework established by X-Men: Children of the Atom, this title introduces the groundbreaking Infinity Gem system. Before each match, players select a specific character and occasionally have the chance to utilize or fight over glowing gems that dynamically alter the battle. Depending on which gem is active—such as the Power Gem that boosts attack damage or the Time Gem that accelerates speed—combatants gain temporary, game-changing buffs that dramatically shift momentum. The signature six-button arcade layout enables blazing-fast chain combos, frantic aerial rave attacks, and screen-filling hyper combos that capture the over-the-top kinetic energy of vintage comic books. Roster highlights range from heavyweights like the Juggernaut and Blackheart to fan-favorites like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, and the psychic powerhouse Psylocke, each boasting faithful signature moves—from Spider-Man's Web Throw to Captain America's Shield Slash.
