Description

He’s totally new. Totally tough. And he’ll stop at nothing to make sure justice prevails! From the dark streets of GOTHAM CITY to the deepest corners of the criminal underworld comes the CAPED CRUSADER as you’ve never seen him before. Incredibly strong. Armed to the teeth. And ready to put his life on the line for the sake of all, on a search-and-destroy mission to end the Joker’s reign of terror. He leaps, he flies, he dodges enemy fire and delivers it right back… with a vengeance. This is no kid stuff. This is as real as video gaming gets. If you liked what you saw in the movie, you’re gonna love what you see here. Because this time around, BATMAN is all business, and he won’t let anything stand in his way!

Batman was released in April 1991 (even if the title screen says 1990) as a conversion kit only. 500 kits were produced in the USA and 101 in Ireland for European distribution.

Batman (Atari)

Overview & History

Released in 1990 by Atari Games, *Batman* is an arcade adaptation of Tim Burton’s blockbuster cinematic milestone. Capitalizing on the unprecedented "Batmania" of the era, Atari utilized the hardware horsepower of their System 1 hardware to craft an isometric beat-'em-up that visually evoked the grim, gothic aesthetic of Gotham City. While Sunsoft famously tackled the console ports, the arcade iteration stands distinct for its frantic pacing, digitized movie samples, and diverse stage designs that transition from neon-lit street brawls to adrenaline-fueled vehicular combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds across five distinct stages, dynamically alternating between traditional hand-to-hand brawler action and high-speed driving sequences. As the Caped Crusader, players punch, kick, and leap through alleyways, the Axis Chemicals plant, and the streets of Gotham. Batman is uniquely equipped with his Batarang for ranged crowd control, which can stun shielded mobsters or drop unsuspecting thugs from overhead girders. Between the platforming and brawling levels, players take the wheel of the iconic Batmobile and the Batwing, engaging in vertical-scrolling vehicular combat where players blast through police barricades and shoot down the Joker’s goons in their pursuit of the final confrontation at Gotham Cathedral.
