Description

64th Street: A Detective Story is a 2D beat’em up game, similar to Final Fight. The game has two heroes to choose from: Rick Anderson, a 35-year old professional private detective and Rick’s 19-year old pupil Allen Tombs. A rich man hired them to rescue his daughter, who was kidnapped by an evil corporation. The gameplay is typical of the genre, the player goes right (in a limited way also up and down) and fights against groups of enemies (and standard, strong, tough boss at the end of the level). The heroes use different fighting styles, and can use various objects.

64th. Street: A Detective Story

Overview & History

Released by Jaleco in 1991, 64th. Street: A Detective Story is an atmospheric, hard-boiled beat-'em-up that channels classic 1940s noir cinema blended with gritty urban vigilantism. Set in a fictionalized, crime-ridden New York, the plot follows veteran private investigator Rick and his sharp-witted partner Allen as they take on the harrowing case of a wealthy industrialist's kidnapped daughter. Rather than relying on mystical martial arts or sci-fi weaponry, the game grounds its narrative in a grimy underworld of corrupt cops, mob enforcers, and neon-lit alleyways. Operating on Jaleco's custom arcade hardware, it stands out for its cinematic intermissions, moody jazz-infused soundtrack, and detailed sprite work that vividly captures the despair and decay of the urban sprawl.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling brawlers of its era, 64th. Street introduces unique environmental interaction mechanics. Players can aggressively hurl enemies directly through glass windows, store fronts, and brick walls, unlocking hidden rooms, bonus items, and alternate progression routes. You can choose between Rick, who relies on heavy-hitting boxing and wrestling throws, and Allen, who favors faster, agile street-fighting strikes. Beyond standard punches and kicks, characters can perform flying dropkicks, grab dazed foes to pummel them with knees, and unleash devastating special clearing attacks at the cost of health. Weapons such as lead pipes, iron bars, and hurled crates can be picked up to turn the tide against relentless waves of thugs. The game also features memorable, multi-tiered boss fights that require precise positioning and environmental utilization to conquer.
