Description

The game is set in the mythical world of The Arabian Nights. Some time ago, the Evil One plagued the peaceful kingdom of Shahariyard. In order to save the King – who, by sorcery, had been transformed into a monkey – a group of heroes must find the Jewel of Seven Colors and release the evil hex.
However, formidable monsters are lurking along their path. Prince Lassid, Princess Lisa, Sinbad and Afshaal, each armed with their own special magic and powers, set out on the quest for the Jewel of Seven Colors. Suspenseful battle scenes, skillful sword fights and a “magic lamp,” which fells all enemies in a single blow, await the players. Their adventure to restore peace to the kingdom now begins.

Arabian Magic

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1992, Arabian Magic is a vibrant, fantasy-themed beat-'em-up that immerses players in a lush, Middle Eastern mythological world inspired by One Thousand and One Nights. Set against a backdrop of colorful pixel-art palaces, scorching deserts, and cavernous dungeons, the storyline follows a brave young hero on a quest to rescue a captured princess and defeat the evil wizard avarice, who has plunged the kingdom into chaos. Utilizing Taito's robust arcade hardware, the game stands out for its massive, beautifully detailed character sprites, scaling effects, and a hauntingly atmospheric chiptune soundtrack. While it shared arcade spaces with titans like Capcom's Dungeons & Dragons, Arabian Magic carved its own niche through its distinct aesthetic, screen-filling magical spells, and frantic cooperative multiplayer action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Arabian Magic blends traditional side-scrolling brawler mechanics with light role-playing elements and screen-clearing magical spectacles. Players can select from a roster of distinct adventurers, including a scimitar-wielding prince, a fierce Amazon warrior, and a mystical genie-summoner, each possessing unique weapon ranges and combo speeds. Beyond standard melee strikes and jumping attacks, players collect magical lamps scattered across stages. Charging these lamps summons elemental genies who unleash devastating screen-clearing attacks, transforming bosses into harmless frogs or engulfing the battlefield in fire and lightning. The game also introduces verticality with multi-tiered platforms and secret areas, demanding careful positioning as waves of goblins, skeletons, and mythical beasts swarm the screen from all angles.
