Description

Avengers, sometimes known as Avenger, and known in Japan as Hissatsu Buraiken is a 1987 overhead-view vertically scrolling beat ’em up arcade game developed and published by Capcom. The game was directed by Takashi Nishiyama, who later co-planned the original Street Fighter and a few of SNK’s early fighting games.

The game takes place in Paradise City, where the villain, “Geshita”, has captured 6 girls from the city. The player’s objective (as Ryu or Ko) is to banish “Geshita” from Paradise City once and for all. During the game, the player can pick up powerups like the “Speed Up”, the Super Punch, Grenades, Shurikens, Nunchaku and extra health. The game also features hidden areas on each level, accessed by breaking doors in structures on either side of the screen. The player’s character has 3 normal means of attack: Punches, which are quick with short range, Kicks, which are slower with longer range, and the Roundhouse, which hits in a 360 degree motion.

Avengers

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1987, Avengers is a top-down arcade beat 'em up that predates the side-scrolling format popularized by later genre milestones. The storyline is surprisingly bleak for the era, tasking the player with rescuing a kidnapped girl from the clutches of a ruthless gang known as the Hell's Legion. Players control a lone martial artist navigating dangerous urban and industrial sectors, utilizing a fixed-screen, multidirectional arena layout rather than linear progression. Though largely unrelated to the Marvel superhero franchise, this obscure coin-op classic stands out as an aggressive, fast-paced relic of late-80s arcade design, requiring precise positioning and swift reflexes to survive the relentless hordes of knife-wielding thugs and armed bosses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, Avengers adopts a top-down isometric-style perspective across distinct stages. The character features a dual-button control scheme dedicated entirely to offense and mobility: one button controls punches while the other executes flying jump-kicks. A signature gameplay mechanic is the temporary acquisition of firearms, such as handguns and machine guns scattered across the stages, which shift the combat dynamic from close-quarters martial arts to frantic, ranged bullet-hell skirmishes. Enemy AI is relentless, surrounding the player from all angles and demanding constant movement. Survival depends on exploiting choke points, executing well-timed jump-kicks to bypass enemy defenses, and effectively managing ammunition when projectile weapons are equipped.
