Developed and published by Valadon Automation in 1982, Bagman is a charmingly eccentric arcade platformer that predates many classic tropes of the genre. Set deep within a cross-section of a gold mine, the game puts players in the muddy boots of a cunning, striped-shirt-wearing bandit determined to loot the subterranean caverns. Unlike typical heroes of the golden age, your goal is pure transgression: steal bags of loot, heave them into your waiting wheelbarrow, and escape to the surface before the relentless mine guards and their attack dogs apprehend you. Its distinct visual style, catchy honky-tonk soundtrack, and multi-layered puzzle-platforming made it a standout coin-op hit.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Navigating the claustrophobic shafts requires meticulous timing and environmental interaction. The mine is a vertically connected labyrinth featuring ladders, elevators, and rolling minecarts that you can actively drive to flatten pursuers. Your primary objective is to grab heavy money bags and lug them across platforms, dropping them into your wheelbarrow at the bottom level. However, carrying a bag significantly restricts your movement—you cannot climb ladders while holding one, forcing you to throw the loot across gaps or ride elevators strategically. To defend yourself against the guards, you can use your pickaxe to smash through weaker rock formations or drop pneumatic drill bits on their heads. Completing a stage requires emptying the mine while avoiding the patrolling wardens and navigating hazards like swinging wrecking balls and descending rock crushers.
