Batsugun was the last release from the arcade game development studio Toaplan and one of the earliest if not the earliest manic or “bullet hell” shoot-’em-ups. A large part of the team later went on to work at CAVE Co., Ltd. where the genre would be refined.

Batsugun for the Saturn integrates the two revisions of the original 1993 arcade game, where the second one, Batsugun Special Version, was completed but never released because the company was bankrupt. Both versions were used to create the Saturn version by the Toaplan offshoot Gazelle. It is a military-themed vertical shooter with a choice of three weapons for the player’s plane at start, with leveling-up of weapons determined by experience points, given when enemies are destroyed, rather than dropped power-ups.

Released in 1993 by Toaplan, *Batsugun* stands as a monumental milestone in arcade history, serving as the literal genesis of the "bullet hell" (danmaku) genre. Set in a dystopian sci-fi future where a ruthless military regime threatens global annihilation, the game follows three diverse pilot-and-ship pairings fighting through swarms of armored ground and air units. Although it was Toaplan’s final arcade release before the company went bankrupt, its lead designers went on to found Cave, carrying *Batsugun’s* chaotic DNA directly into legendary titles like *DonPachi*. The game distinguishes itself visually with massive, detailed sprites, colossal mid-bosses, and a breathtaking volume of simultaneous projectiles that forever altered the vertical scrolling shoot 'em up landscape.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessors, *Batsugun* revolutionizes offensive capability by introducing an Experience (EXP) leveling system. As players destroy enemies, they collect floating point items that not only raise their score but also level up their ship up to a maximum of level 5. Each level dramatically enhances the primary weapon, exponentially increasing firepower, widening shot coverage, and spawning massive auxiliary drones or laser arrays. Players can choose between three distinct craft: the balanced Type-A (Tornado), the wide-spreading Type-B (Thunder), and the concentrated laser-focused Type-C (Sonic). Alongside standard rapid-fire, pilots have access to screen-clearing bombs and a unique "special" attack that triggers devastating elemental devastation. Survival relies on precision micro-dodging through dense laser webs while utilizing the ship's deceptively small pixel hitbox.
