Description

Battle Chopper (Mr. Heli in Japan) takes place in the year 2999 and Mr. Muddy is threatening the planet. Fortunately, the player has a fully armed, large helicopter with which to attack his sadistic minions. The helicopter will fly through four side-view levels, primarily scrolling left to right but with some variant, each of which ends with a boss.

As well as enemies, there are many blocks on the levels. The weapon upgrade system is build into these, which function in two different ways. Most will drop crystals, which if collected are added to a cash total. The others reveal a picture of a weapon with a price – make contact with it while carrying enough credits and the weapon will be bought. When the energy bar runs out, the player loses a life. When this happens, the player loses all money.

Battle Chopper

Overview & History

Originally released in arcades by Irem in 1987—and later known internationally as *Mr. Heli no Daibōken*—*Battle Chopper* is a quintessential side-scrolling shoot-'p-up that infuses gritty mechanical design with charmingly surreal cave exploration. Unlike standard horizontal shooters where your craft merely glides forward, this title tasks players with piloting a heavily armed, spherical mining helicopter through deeply subterranean environments. The storyline follows the titular Mr. Heli as he ventures into the earth to rescue the kidnapped citizens of the planet Rando from the clutches of the evil greedy mining conglomerate, the Muddy Corporation. Eschewing the cold outer-space motifs prevalent in late-80s arcade cabinets, Irem delivered a quirky, visually distinct underground odyssey that required both twitch reflexes and methodical puzzle-like navigation.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, *Battle Chopper* demands exceptional spatial awareness. Players must manage a constantly depleting fuel meter, which is replenished by collecting crystals dropped by destroyed enemies or mined from destructible terrain. The game introduces an RPG-lite economy system: scattered orange crystals act as currency, allowing players to pull up an in-game shop at designated checkpoints. Here, Mr. Heli can upgrade his arsenal, purchasing powerful twin lasers, front-and-back bombs, shields, and speed boosters. The control scheme requires precise mastery of dual-directional firing, letting players shoot forwards and downwards simultaneously to clear out subterranean ground units while dogfighting airborne obstacles. The level design forces you to weave through tight cavern gaps, balancing aggressive combat with careful, hovering momentum.
