Description

Black Widow is an arcade game where you control the titular spider trying to protect its web. You move the spider around the web with the left joystick, and use the right joystick to shoot in different directions. Your web is being attacked by other bugs. You must either shoot them or avoid them. Avoiding them means leaving them to the Bug Slayer, a creature that’s harmless to you, but is invulnerable and competes with you. After it defeats a bug, you can go after its prey to steal its points.

Released by Atari, Inc. in 1982, Black Widow is a cult-classic twin-stick shooter that stands as one of the most visually distinct and challenging arcade games of its era. Unlike traditional space shooters, players do not pilot a spaceship; instead, they control a venomous arachnid defending its subterranean web against an onslaught of mutant insects. Designed by Don Strachan and Rick Moncrief, the game was originally conceived as a follow-up to Centipede, utilizing a unique color palette and vector-like aesthetic wrapped inside a standard raster monitor. Due to its high difficulty curve, it was produced in relatively small numbers, making original upright cabinets rare collector's items today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of Black Widow is to survive waves of aggressive bugs that spawn at the edges of a multi-tiered, circular spiderweb. As the black widow, your primary offensive tool is a directional zapper that shoots lethal web strands to disintegrate incoming threats like mosquitoes, beetles, and high-scoring sparkers. However, pure offense is a losing strategy. Players must strategically rescue trapped butterflies and snatch floating treasures to boost their score while dodging deadly alien predators. The web itself is dynamic; enemies can chew through its strands, shrinking your safe zone and altering your traversal paths. If you manage to destroy a glowing red spider, it triggers a screen-clearing explosion, introducing a vital tactical layer to frantic late-stage survival.
